How Can I Protect My Foundation from Water?

We hear it all the time - a strong foundation is the most important thing, especially in a home. Its job is to support the home that you and your loved ones gather in, cry in, and care for one another in. Water and moisture are some of the main causes of a degrading foundation. So what do you need to do to protect your foundation?

  1. Install a sump pump into your basement.

Foundations sit on soil, which tends to hold a lot of moisture. No matter what you do, there will be times when water will seep into your basement. Installing a sump pump will help mitigate that; they are specifically designed to reduce the saturation of water below the ground that your foundation sits on.

  1. Keep your gutters clean.

Dirty gutters mean rain water is not draining away from your home properly. If they are not cleaned often and properly, water is likely to pool by the base of your home and seep into your foundation. If your gutters are damaged, contact a professional to help. Keeping your gutters well-maintained is a great, cost-efficient way to protect your home and foundation.

  1. Install a french drain.

Many landscaping companies can help with this; french drains are gravel/rock-filled trenches that direct water away from your home through embedded perforated piping. The pipes run and empty the water a safe distance from the house. You may need more than one; ask a professional for their opinion.

These are all great steps to take for your home’s foundation. However, we know that sometimes it is too late. If you think your home has water damage, give us a call today for a free estimate.
